Faculty Chair (Full Time)

Description

The Faculty Chair (FC) provides leadership to the school, out of a model of servant leadership. The FC works in close collaboration with the Administrative Director (AD) to lead the Circle of Chairs, our Management Team, which includes the FC, the AD and the Chairs of each of our three Faculties. In the last eight years we have undergone intentional organizational change to take on the mantle of a more mature school. TWS has a detailed Strategic and Financial plan in place, as well as a strong complement of skilled faculty, administrators, board members, alumni/ae and parents serving the school.

Requirements

A successful candidate will:

  • Be an experienced trained Waldorf teacher with previous successful leadership experience in a Waldorf context.
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to collaboration, objectivity, relationship and consensus building as well as conflict resolution.
  • Be a self-starter who is well-organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects, is timely and has excellent communications skills.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to set priorities and maintain accountability.
  • Have the ability to convert strategies into effective operational activities and achievements in a timely manner.
  • Strong basic word processing and email skills.

Responsibilities

The work of this position can be broadly captured under these five areas (with the focus or emphasis shifting as the needs of the organization and our strategic plan evolve):

1) Pedagogical / Teacher Support

Support the faculty in their administrative and pedagogical work through Thursday meeting work, strategic plan work, and working with committees and individuals on various school wide projects. keeping apprised of research, articles, and new developments in Waldorf education, being active in AWSNA, and on occasion, teaching.

2) Administrative/Governance

The FC is the Chair the Circle of Chairs (including setting agendas, chairing the meetings, following up on matters in-between meetings), as well as the Chair of the Thursday Faculty Meetings. The FC supports the individual faculty Chairs in their work, and works collaboratively with the administration and Board of Trustees to ensure the smooth and effective running of the school.

3) Parent Work

The FC plays a key leadership role in the work of the school, and therefore maintains regular communication with the parent body as a whole, supports the work with Parent Circle, and on occasion is involved in resolving parent concerns.

4) Link to the greater “Waldorf World”

As a leader carrying the whole picture of the school, the FC is the first delegate to AWSNA, and is active in giving support to other schools through this work. The FC attends all regional meetings and conferences as well as the summer conference.

5) Outside World/Larger Community

The FC is active building relationships with outside organizations (including other independent school associations, publications and others in the broader educational community), and often represents TWS and Waldorf to the media.

The Faculty Chair is expected to attend most if not all Community Meetings, Annual General Meetings, Open Houses, and other significant festivals and events in the school year. The FC is seen as an active “public face” of the school to the parent body and broader community. The responsibilities of the position carry requirements into early July, and they resume in mid-August to prepare for the school year. The FC is expected to work with the AD and others on the Management Team to ensure to a process exists for dealing with emergency situations over any breaks in the school year.

Compensation

Our salary levels are based on teaching experience.
