Toronto Waldorf School is a fully accredited, independent, co-educational school for children from birth to Grade 12. It employs the methods and principles of Waldorf education. The first Waldorf school was established by Austrian scientist and philosopher, Dr. Rudolf Steiner, in Germany in 1919.
As of September we have an enrolment of about 350 students: 70 in nurseries and kindergartens; 200 in Grades 1 through 8; and 80 in Grades 9 through 12. There are an additional 45 families in our infant and toddler programs.
Facilities
Our campus, located on Bathurst Street, north of Highway 7, has:
- A unique three-story circular wooden building that blends into its natural surroundings, a park-like setting adjacent to a ravine
- A play and sports grounds for all students, including play gardens, a forest playground and sports fields
- A biodynamic garden and working farm for curriculum studies
Developmental Curriculum
Toronto Waldorf School teaches an integrated curriculum unique to Waldorf schools. The curriculum is developmental in nature, providing students with learning experiences appropriate for their age and growth – the right thing at the right time. The capacity for serious academic work and thinking in the High School is first prepared through healthy play and artistic learning in the kindergarten and lower grades. Children are supported and encouraged, not rushed into academic performance.
Accreditation
Toronto Waldorf School offers a Waldorf curriculum accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education. It is also accredited by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI); it is a member of the Waldorf Schools Association of Ontario (WSAO).
International Network
Incorporated in 1968 as the first Waldorf school in Canada, Toronto Waldorf School is now one of more than 2000 schools and kindergartens worldwide linked together through common educational ideals. Each aims to prepare children to meet the challenges of our world and the future – with clarity of thought, a caring heart and confidence to initiate change.
