Reunited

On Saturday June 9 TWS hosted a small but spirited group of class of ’87 alumni/ae for their 20th Year Reunion.
Nine class members attended the official reunion events: Peter Daniels, Jason Fisher, Michael Priestley, Chris Clouse, Tom Lee, Nicole Flowers (Schneider), Chris Runge, Brett Smith and Christian McLeod.
Teachers present included Charlotte Chambers, class teacher from Grades 1-4; Helga & Gerhard Rudolph; Bob Pickering; Renate Krause; Catherine Daugherty, TWS Development Officer; and Helene Gross representing the school from the Circle of Chairs.
Sara Anderson, acting Alumni/ae Coordinator, read regrets and good wishes from classmates and teachers who were unable to attend the day’s events.
Anxieties quickly dissolved when classmates recognized each other and began to reconnect. Charlotte Chambers and Helga Rudolph addressed the class and shared their recollections.
Over lunch many stories from the good old days were shared accompanied by lots of laughter. Most notably, the true origins of an extreme form of eurythmy were revealed. For those of you familiar with the more hard-core aspects of the Waldorf curriculum, you can thank this class for inventing “combat eurythmy.” You’ll have to ask them if you’re interested! (Perhaps an addition to the arts program might be warranted?)
After lunch, Mr. Rudolph gave his signature tour of the school and delivered the '87ers to the Class Circle event, an intimate gathering for class members only. Officially, this was the fifth class to attend their reunion, and in accordance with our (five-year-old) tradition, those present planted an apple tree in the alumni/ae orchard, dedicated to the current graduating Grade 12 class as a symbol of their welcomed entry into the alumni/ae community.
Though this was the official end of the reunion events at the school, no one was in a hurry to part company; the class and family members got together for an impromptu game of soccer.
The day was topped off with the Saturday night BBQ hosted by Nicole Flowers, where two more class members, Maya Samilla and Gislaine Maltby, joined the festivities. As host to this wonderful event, it was a pleasure for me to reconnect with friends that I went to high school with.
Not only did it stir up memories of my reunion two years ago, but it also proved to me that though 20 years may pass, the bond between Waldorf alumni/ae is a strong one. The 20-year reunion has the power to heal old wounds, dispel adolescent notions and create lasting friendships.
